Manchester has fast become the most desirable city to live in the UK, and its thriving food scene has played a major role in this. To truly get a real taste of the city, you need to skip the high-street chains and sample some of the local culinary talent instead.
From repurposed garages serving some of the best pizza in the country to massive food halls offering every type of cuisine you could ever want, we explore some of our favourite independent spots in Manchester for 2026 – all tried, tested, and highly recommended by us.

Ramona
Located in a repurposed industrial MOT garage on the edge of Ancoats and Northern Quarter, Ramona is one of the quirkiest and most popular places to eat in Manchester. There’s a variety of seating on offer, from their cosy outside space with festoon lighting and campfires to the giant canvas indoor tipi.
Their Detroit-style pizza pies served on 48-hour fermented focaccia are arguably the best in the city, featuring The Jabba (topped with salami, ‘Nduja, jalapenos, and hot honey) and Cali Pepps (pepperoni, topped with creamy burrata and hot honey). A side order of tater tots is a must-have – we recommend the Truffletots with truffle mayo and pecorino cheese.
Wash your slice down with one of their signature cocktails like the Ramona Margarita and the Ramona Paloma, or their in-house Ramona Pilsner. It’s one of those places that is just as good whether you’re looking for an evening meal or a nice lunch spot. They even do a bottomless brunch at £34 per person, which includes your choice of pizza and tater tots, and the service is very quick for such a busy venue.
Turning up on the day isn’t recommended due to its popularity, so look to book in advance at least a week before, if not more, for larger groups or weekends.

Vincenzo Trattoria
If you’re looking for authentic Italian food in Manchester away from the usual big names, Vincenzo is a spot that demands a visit. You’ll find the venue hidden in the city centre on St Ann’s Street and will instantly recognise it by the hanging flowers on the ceiling and framed Italian artwork on the walls.
The family-run restaurant covers a variety of traditional cuisine, such as Lasagna dell’Emilia, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, Pollo Milanese, and a range of wood-fired sourdough pizzas. Both pizza and pasta dishes can be substituted for gluten-free alternatives, too, and they serve several vegan and vegetarian meals (including the Giardiniera Pizza and Penne all’Arrabiata).
Even if you simply fancy a small plate after a day of shopping, you can chill with some bread and olives or an antipasti board along with an Aperol Spritz. Should the weather make you want to sit outside as much as possible, they do have a lovely little outdoor terrace.

Mackie Mayor
Mackie Mayor is somewhat of a staple in the Manchester food scene, offering something for the entire group. The large cosmopolitan food hall is found inside a restored 1858 Grade-II listed former produce market and features a glass roof, long wooden benches, and two tiers of balconies.
The venue is strictly walk-ins only, but you can usually find yourself a place to sit even during the weekends and Friday nights. As a piece of advice, head straight upstairs, since these tend to have the highest turnover, should you struggle to find space for your party initially. They do offer bookings for groups of 8+, though, but are highly sought after and only available from Tuesday to Friday, with bookings taken weeks in advance.
Rather than one single menu, Mackie Mayor features a huge list of independent kitchens and bars serving everything from street food to comfort dishes. All you need to do is scan the QR code on your table, and everything is served directly to you (although you may need to head to the bar for certain drinks).
Vendors at Mackie Mayors
- Pico’s Tacos (Mexican Street Food) – Mexican street food including fresh tacos (including pork shoulder and baja tempura fish), loaded nachos, and frozen margaritas.
- Honest Crust Sourdough Pizza (Neapolitan Pizza & Garlic Bread) – Neapolitan-style wood-fired sourdough pizzas, including the classic margherita, as well as a spicy ‘Nduja and a White Heat pizza. They also serve fresh garlic bread.
- New Wave Ramen (Japanese Ramen) – Traditional Japanese ramen with a rich and tasty broth, such as a spicy Lamb Tantanmen Ramen and a Karaage Chicken Ramen. You can also order pork gyozas as a light snack.
- Tender Cow (Steak & Meat Specialties) – A range of breakfast, lunch, and dinner dishes, including their TC Full English, Steak Sandwich with Chips, and Flat Iron Steak with Chimichurri. The go-to vendor for meat-lovers.
- Chilli B (Thai Street Food) – Authentic Thai street food inspired by the flavours of Bangkok. You can opt for their Drunken Noodles (that is paired perfectly with a cold pint) and their Pad Krapow – a spicy and fragrant dish with minced chicken, red chillies, and holy basil served over steamed rice.
- Mumma’s Fried Chicken (Fried Chicken & Comfort Food) – The crispiest buttermilk fried chicken in the city – you can choose between their original burger or fried chicken with candied jalapeños and a side of ranch. There’s also the option to order onion rings and mac n cheese bites.

Also located inside is Jack in the Box, which is the hub for beer enthusiasts, and Reserve Wines, which serve local brands specialising in whites, reds, and spritzes. During the day, Atkinson’s Coffee Roasters offer the perfect wake-up remedy with their selection of coffees and teas.
If you have any allergies, it’s worth asking a server or heading down to the vendors directly, as ordering on the app may not guarantee certain dishes are suitable.

Butter Bird
If you’re looking for the ultimate rotisserie hotspot in Manchester, Butter Bird is the place to go. With its state-of-the-art Rotisol Millenium oven, signature house butters, and brined chicken, the restaurant offers crispy and succulent meat across its extensive menu.
The choice is up to you here, with ½ bird or a whole bird on offer along with your choice of butter – the lemon, thyme and cracked black pepper being the winner here. This is then perfectly complemented with a choice of chicken salt fries or rotisserie potatoes with smoked paprika and parmesan, and their chicken gravy.
Looking for somewhere to have a Sunday roast? Butter Bird does one of the tastiest in Manchester, with your choice of chicken or beef, served with potatoes, roasted carrots, buttered cabbage, a Yorkshire pudding, carrot and swede mash, and gravy. There’s also a vegetarian chargrilled aubergine option.
You’ll find a seating area on the front of Cutting Room Square, meaning you can enjoy your meal with a glass of Crémant (which we think is better than Prosecco) in what we deem to be Manchester’s trendiest neighbourhood.

Sunday-Thursday: 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Friday-Saturday: 12:00 pm – 12:00 am

Lücky Ramen & Sushi
Nestled along Blossom Street in Ancoats, Lücky is a Tokyo-inspired restaurant serving some of the best authentic ramen and sushi in Manchester.
During the day, the venue is bright and serves as the perfect brunch spot, transforming into a dimly lit, romantic space with rainforest marble accents at night. For the summer months, there’s also an outdoor terrace to enjoy a cocktail outside, with heaters in case the temperature drops.
They are most famous for their 8-hour slow-simmered broth and hand-rolled noodles, with a special shoutout to their Kasaoka ramen. The dish comprises a meat broth with crispy chicken karaage, shiitake mushrooms, nori, confit garlic, and a 24-hour tea-stained ajitama egg. The shaved parmesan on top only adds to the creaminess of the dish, but doesn’t feel overly rich or overpowering.
Other great choices on the menu include the Tonkotsu, a rich pork broth with crispy duck breast and homemade chilli oil, and the Gyokai, which features soft-shell crab in a truffle chilli oil broth. When it comes to sushi, you can’t go wrong with their signature Lücky Roll Uramaki (tempura prawn with seared salmon, avocado and truffle mayo) and the Spicy Tuna Rolls, with a serving of wasabi on the side.
For a small bite to eat, consider the pan-fired pork and prawn Gyoza or the Crispy Karaage with yuzu mayo. Pair your meal with an ice-cold bottle of Asahi or one of their Japanese-inspired cocktails, like the Sinaloa Residence and the Sour Cerise Margarita.
On Mondays and Tuesdays, there’s a 50% discount on ramen and on Wednesdays, a 50% discount on sushi. They also have a lunch offer where you can get a bowl of ramen with a soft drink for £12 or beer for £13, but this is limited to tables of four (the venue is also walk-ins only).
Lücky were really accommodating with allergies when we visited, which is often a worry when eating at places that serve seafood and fish.

Wednesday-Saturday: 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Viet Shack Restaurant
On the edge of Great Ancoats Street, Viet Shack specialises in Vietnamese street food with a modern twist. After their success as a food stall in Arndale Market, they brought their popular dishes to the bustling Ancoats area.
The inside is filled with neon signs, colourful walls, and hanging greenery that make it one of the most Instagrammable spots in Manchester. The menu is loaded with favourites like Pho, along with some of the best loaded fries in the city. The Shack Fries are our favourite, which come with beef bavette steak, chargrilled chicken thigh, crispy shallots, sriracha, mayo, and tamarind sauce – and the portion size is more than enough.
They offer a lunch menu during weekdays before 2 pm, which includes 3 small plates for £16 or a big plate and a drink for £12/£16. The cocktail menu is also a big selling point, particularly their signature drinks, The Oasis and The Ex, although you can never go wrong with a bottle of Hanoi lager.
Viet Shack was also great with allergy advice, offering a physical guide and making sure food was prepared safely. This can often be a worry with Vietnamese food, since peanuts are used heavily across dishes.
Opening Times
Monday-Thursday: 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, 5:15 pm – 9:00 pm
Friday: 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm, 5:15 pm – 9:30 pm
Saturday: 12:00 pm – 9:30 pm

Maricarmen NQ
If you’re looking for traditional Spanish tapas in Manchester, this is the place to be. On a corner in Northern Quarter, you’ll find a cosy venue with a bright yellow entrance and playful indoor murals that are unlike the normal tapas-style interiors.
The key selling point here is their dining concept: El Tableo, which is inspired by bars in Madrid and Southern Spain. The staff will continuously walk by each table with a huge tray filled with a variety of small dishes. You choose exactly what you want and are only charged per plate, with each costing the same (£3.80). If you’re unsure exactly what’s on offer, the servers can tell you everything you need to know.

We went a bit overboard during our visit, but didn’t feel overly full, and it was great value for money. We chose to go for the Croquetas del Dia (Iberico ham), Chorizo a la Sidra, Padron Peppers, Huevos Rotos con Trufa, Pork Belly Bites, Pan con Tomate y Jamon, Patatas Bravas, and Steak with Salsa Verde. If you don’t see these circulating, you can always ask the staff to see if there’s some available that they can bring over (we did this for the steak, which is a must-try dish).
Maricarmen NQ is walk-in only, and because the venue is quite small, you may need to wait for a table to become available. A server will direct you upstairs to the bar area (Gildas), which is much more intimate and inspired by Pintxo culture. Order yourself the selection of bread and a glass of wine, and your table will be ready in no time.
The restaurant is also really helpful when it comes to allergies. They carefully explained each dish and highlighted which were not suitable. They also made a special request for the plates we were interested in tasting to be prepared separately.
Opening Times
Monday-Thursday: 12:00 pm – 10:00 pm
Friday-Saturday: 12:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Sunday: 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Wolf At The Door
Wolf At The Door is one of the city’s hidden gems, with a dive-bar aesthetic and budget-friendly menu. Found directly in Northern Quarter on Thomas Street, seating is spread across two floors, and the decor includes graffiti walls and a full-size canoe above the downstairs bar.
While you can book in advance for peace of mind, they are accommodating to walk-ins, even on Fridays and Saturdays. It is among the best places in Manchester for bao buns, with a creative menu including the likes of their chippy tea bao, fried spam and kimchi bao, Korean beef bao, and crispy vegan duck bao (you can also substitute the bun for a soft taco shell instead). Each is reasonably priced at £2-3 per item.
If you’re after something a little more substantial, their menu also includes a chicken katsu bowl (with a vegan alternative) and a beef masaman curry, which you can have served over rice or with chips. And you can’t go wrong with their Korean fried chicken burger or the Korean cheesesteak sub.
The cocktail menu includes house favourites like the Lychee Margarita and Peach Hi-Ball, as well as mini martinis, soju shots, and wine. They have a Happy Hour that runs from Monday to Friday from 3 pm to 6 pm, which features discounted prices on beers and cocktails and food deals (such as £5 burgers and banh mi).
It’s the perfect place for those weekends when you’re out with friends and want something to eat but don’t particularly want a heavy meal. Simply choose a few bao buns and wash them down with a pint of Omnipollo (the only place in the city to have a permanent draught line from the Swedish brewery).
Opening Times
Sunday-Wednesday: 12:00 pm – 12:00 am
Thursday: 12:00 pm – 1:00 am
Friday-Saturday: 12:00 pm – 2:00 am

Tangerine
Tangerine is a brand-new rising star in the Manchester food scene, located on New Bailey Street under Salford Central Station. The inside is striking and has a 1970s speakeasy vibe, with orange neon signs and original exposed brickwork.
The venue is split into two sections, Platform 1 (daytime scene) and Platform 2 (night scene). It’s almost like a maze, with a range of independent kitchens, live music stages, a martini bar, an arthouse, and an outside roof terrace (that not many people know about).
With plenty of seating available, you can easily walk in and find yourself a table for drinks or food, but booking is available online.
Food Vendors at Tangerine Manchester
- Gold Boy (T1) – A burger bar with a small yet effective menu comprising an Oxo Brown Butter Burger, Truffle Parmesan Burger, and Cheeseburger. They also serve beef dripping fries with garlic salt.
- Yaki-Fri (T2) – A fusion concept combining European comfort classics with Japanese street food. You can choose from their Yakatori or their Kushiyaki (beef or mushroom). The loaded fries are also a winner (specifically the Sesame Fries and Truffle Parmesan Fries).
- Joji (T3) – An authentic ramen and chicken wing shack serving boneless wings in a spicy Korean sauce and Tan Tan Ramen. There’s also a range of small plates like Salt & Pepper Tots and Gyozas (chicken and vegetable).
- Electric Pizza Shop (T4) – Pizzas made from 48-hour fermented dough and baked in a TurboChef oven Salford-style. Choose from their Pepperoni & Ricotta Pie, Spicy Vodka Pie, Mushroom Pie, and more. Their Orange Wednesday promotion means you can grab a Margherita pizza for just £6 all day long.
- Departures (T5) – The rotating guest spot at Tangerine to bring in culinary talent across the UK. Currently, this is listed as ‘Coming Soon’, so we’ll be keeping an eye on their socials to see who will be setting up shop here.
- Clement (T6) – An artisan bakery fuelling guests in the early morning and throughout the day. The loaded croissants pair perfectly with their in-house roasted coffee. They are open from 7:00 am on weekdays and 8:00 am on weekends.

Drinks Vendors at Tangerine Manchester
When it comes to drinks, you’re spoilt for choice at the Grand Departures bar, which covers several different types of espresso martinis (including a Matcha Martini) as well as their signature Tangerine Spritz and pints of Northern Monk Faith. Bada Bing
An Italian-American deli venue hidden away on Oldham Street, Bada Bing has become a popular local sandwich spot in Manchester. What was originally a passion project during lockdown has now received viral fame for its generous portions and creative flavours.
They specialise in huge, freshly baked subs packed with meat, including their signature sub ‘The Bing’, which features gabagool (dry-cured pork), pistachio mortadella, salami, provolone cheese, tomato, lettuce, and mayo, along with a pickle relish. Other top choices include the Spicy Italian, Muffaletta, and Chicago Beef. And don’t forget to order a side pot of Gorgonzola Ranch or Chilli Oil to dip the crusts.
It’s the perfect place to grab lunch to go, and is strictly walk-ins and takeaway only. Service is quick, though, and you can sit outside in the sun at Stevenson Square to enjoy your food.
Bada Bing does offer a meal deal that includes a sub with a drink and a house-baked cookie, which costs £19.80 (standard subs cost around £12-15). Note that they only make a set amount of fresh semolina rolls each day, so head before the prime lunchtime rush (12:30 pm – 2 pm) to avoid disappointment.
