AD: This was a gifted opportunity. As always, all opinions and photography remain entirely our own.
As we enter the Autumn months, there’s nothing better than spending those cooler evenings around a cosy table in the centre of town, along with comforting food. We were recently invited to sample the newly launched Autumn Menu at Hotel du Vin Harrogate to see just how the bistro’s signature French-inspired cuisine had adapted to the changing seasons. Here is our complete Hotel du Vin Harrogate review, including an in-depth look at everything we tasted and tested during our time here.
Atmosphere and Ambience at Bistro du Vin
Situated inside a row of converted Georgian townhouses overlooking The Stray, the Hotel du Vin Harrogate is synonymous with luxury. While developers modernised the buildings back in 2003 for the hotel’s launch, they deliberately preserved the original Georgian and Victorian design, which you’ll notice immediately as you walk through the door.

As you enter the hotel, the on-site restaurant Bistro du Vin is located to the right. The front-of-house team immediately welcomed us and led us to our table. They reserved us a seat by the window, which featured views overlooking the front of the hotel and The Stray. The interior features dark mahogany panelling, leather seating, vintage oak tables, and romantic lighting that work in unison to create the perfect intimate setting for luxury dining in Harrogate.

The Autumn Menu at Bistro du Vin
Our server for the night, Hannah, carefully guided us through the choice of menus that the venue currently offered. This included the Autumn à la Carte menu as well as the five-course Taste du Vin menu paired with a selection of wines. We chose the three-course à la Carte selection.

To accompany our meal, we explored the restaurant’s extensive wine list with the guidance of Hannah, who kindly let us sample a few options before helping us settle on the Pikes Riesling.
The autumn menu at Hotel du Vin leans heavily into rich, indulgent French classics with a unique twist. Alongside roasted pork belly and rib-eye steak, it showcases a generous selection of fresh seafood dishes, including roasted scallops, grilled red prawns, and pavé of cod. Because a member of our party has a fish allergy, Hannah recommended suitable dishes from the menu and provided us with a detailed allergy guide for peace of mind. Thanks to her attentive service and the kitchen’s careful preparation, we felt completely reassured. We’d highly recommend the venue to anyone with dietary or allergy requirements looking to dine in Harrogate.
The Starters

The Hotel du Vin autumn menu leans heavily into seasonal warmth and comfort. To start our dining experience, we selected two contrasting starters that highlighted the kitchen’s versatility. Our first choice was the Steak Tartare from the specials menu. This consisted of high-quality beef combined with capers and shallots, topped with a raw egg yolk. On the side, there were salted crisps that paired well with the tang of the steak.

Alongside this, we decided to go with the Champignons Sautés, a vegan dish comprising wild mushrooms tossed in a Madeira sauce over toasted sourdough bread. This proved to be the ideal counterpoint to our meatier dish. The sauce was savoury and creamy, and the deep-fried mushroom on top had a remarkably satisfying, meaty flavour. For plant-based diners, this is an absolute must-order.

The Mains

Moving on to the main courses, we leaned into the heartier side of the restaurant’s seasonal offerings. We were told that there was only one piece of Fillet Steak left from the specials menu that evening, so we snapped it up without hesitation. As self-proclaimed steak enthusiasts, we couldn’t resist a medium-rare piece of high-quality steak, and this was cooked to absolute perfection. The outside of the steak was lovely and crisp, with a smoky flavour, and beautifully pink on the inside. This came with a grilled tomato and fresh watercress, and we also opted for the peppercorn sauce. The sauce was deeply flavourful and rich, and complemented the beef beautifully.

Our second dish was the Blanc de Poulet Nourri au Maïs, a crispy and succulent piece of corn-fed chicken breast with wild mushrooms and burnt leeks. This was smothered in a chicken velouté sauce – a tasty blend of white chicken stock and a blonde roux. This combination was both comforting and savoury, which paired well with our choice of wine. Every element on the plate reaffirmed why Bistro du Vin Harrogate remains a staple choice for North Yorkshire fine-dining enthusiasts. We also chose to order some Pommes Frites to soak up all the sauce.

Dessert
After our meal, we weren’t entirely sure we could fit in a dessert. The portion sizes at the restaurant are incredibly generous, but the list looked too good to pass up the opportunity. Unanimously, we decided to share the Crème Brûlée. The velvety custard base was topped with a crispy layer of caramelised sugar. This was lighter on the palate than we originally thought and a wonderfully refreshing finish following such a hearty lineup of courses.

Final Verdict: Is Bistro du Vin Worth Visiting this Autumn?
Our visit confirmed that the Hotel du Vin Harrogate delivers a dependable, high-quality dining experience. The new menu features hearty seasonal ingredients and top-notch service, along with an unmatched wine list. It’s the standout choice in our opinion for a celebratory dinner or a romantic evening in Harrogate.
